Indian neobanks in 2026: UPI won, so the apps sell metal and US stocks

RBI does not license a generic neobank. Jupiter, Fi, and Niyo wrap partner banks. Here is how to read the card.

UPI made account-to-account payments free. The Indian ‘neobank’ therefore cannot win on transfers. It wins on credit, metal debit, US investing, and UX. That is why every landing page looks like a lifestyle card.

Who holds the rupee

Jupiter and Fi have historically sat on Federal Bank (and other) current or savings accounts. DICGC covers the scheduled bank, up to ₹5 lakh, not the brand. If the partner changes, the scheme follows the new bank — if the product is still a bank deposit.

Forex is a different product

Niyo’s original job is a forex card under RBI liberalised remittance / AD rules. Do not dump it in the same table as a salary account without a licence column. Wise remains the cross-border control for people who already have a bank.

What we score

App craft is high across this set. Safety is capped until the partner line is stable and named in-app. US-stock sleeves are broker products. They do not inherit DICGC.
